I’ve been waiting for a chance to shoot lightning for years now. It’s not as easy as it sounds — you want to be at a safe distance and ideally not get rained on, but still close enough to the action with a good vantage point. Well, I finally got lucky a couple of weeks back.
I was just touching down in Sofia when from the plane I was able to see the storm in the distance. Already in the cab I knew it would be if not ideal conditions, then at least pretty great so I knew this was the opportunity and got ready. As soon as I stepped into my flat, I got my camera out and headed towards the roof. And voila!

The thought that this wasn’t the safest of places did cross my mind (I was right next to one of the lightning rods…), but at this point it was too late to back out. The spectacle was too good! 🙂

The wind was picking up and not too long long after this, I got rained on. But the lightning bolts were huge! Basically it was the full experience 😀

The rain didn’t last for long though and the lightning never got too close. I changed my position on the roof and shot a bit more.

Within 30 minutes, the lightning show had largely died down. I was wet to the bone, a bit cold, but with a huge grin on my face 🙂

Now, I just need to find a place to do this in nature! 😉
whow…. very cool pictures…. war das nicht ein bisschen gefährlich, mitten im Gewitter auf den höchsten Punkt des Hauses zu klettern?:-)
Thanks! Certainly wasn’t, no. But I wasn’t going to miss the chance 🙂
Love the pretty rooftop you are on as well!
Quite nice, isn’t it? Old Sofia has its charm 🙂
Love your pictures.
Impressive display–really good shots! 🙂
great job
Charming.
Agreed. Though standing on that rooftop, one couldn’t help but think “This might be really dumb idea” 🙂
